SAMARITAN INPATIENT MENTAL HEALTH UNIT
The Samaritan Inpatient Mental Health Unit renovation was a comprehensive transformation focused on creating a safe, therapeutic, and dignified environment for behavioral health care. Every aspect of the design was guided by the safety and security requirements of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH), ensuring full compliance with state standards while fostering a sense of comfort and healing. Patient rooms, corridors, and common areas were upgraded with anti-ligature fixtures, tamper-resistant materials, and enhanced observation capabilities to protect both patients and staff. Thoughtful spatial planning supports clear sightlines, controlled access, and balanced separation between public and private zones to maintain safety without compromising privacy or autonomy.
Equally important to the project was the creation of an environment that promotes wellness, calm, and recovery. Natural tones, durable yet soothing finishes, and carefully controlled lighting contribute to a non-institutional atmosphere that helps reduce stress and agitation. Dedicated activity areas and flexible therapeutic spaces encourage engagement and support individualized treatment approaches. By combining rigorous safety measures with evidence-based design strategies, the renovated unit now meets OMH standards while embodying a compassionate approach to mental health care that prioritizes both protection and human connection.
