SAWYER’S BAY HOME
Nestled along the rugged shores of Lake Superior in upstate New York, this custom wood-framed residence blends modern craftsman influences with a deep respect for its natural setting. The design features a high-performance ICF foundation, solid wood cabinetry, and hand-crafted detailing throughout, ensuring durability and timeless appeal in a climate known for its extremes. The home’s orientation was carefully planned to capture sweeping lake views while maximizing cross-ventilation from the bay, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling and creating a dynamic connection between interior and exterior spaces. Oversized windows and clerestories bring in abundant natural daylight, creating warm, luminous interiors that shift in character with the rhythm of the lake and sky.
Beyond its architectural character, the home was designed to promote occupant wellness and environmental stewardship. Passive design strategies and an airtight envelope allow the structure to exceeded energy codes, maintaining stable indoor comfort while lowering operating costs. Natural materials—low-VOC finishes, hardwoods, and stone—support clean indoor air quality, while a high performance ventilation system and sound-absorptive surfaces enhance physical comfort and mental calm. The integration of biophilic principles—framed lake vistas, natural textures, and ample daylight—helps reduce stress and foster a sense of restoration. Together, these elements create a lakeside retreat that not only harmonizes with its northern landscape but also nurtures the well-being of those who call it home.
