MAGALIA QUONSET
This custom Quonset home, designed for the wildfire-prone landscapes of the Mountain West, combines resilience with refined modern living. The innovative X-shaped dome configuration provides a sculptural architectural form that distributes structural loads efficiently while enhancing fire resistance through its continuous, non-combustible steel shell. Inside, the layout centers on an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area that flows seamlessly beneath the soaring arched ceilings. The first-floor master suite offers comfort and universal accessibility for aging in place, while the upper level includes three additional bedrooms connected by a central game loft—creating a flexible family space that encourages connection and creativity.
Durable finishes, high-performance glazing, and radiant concrete floors contribute to the home’s ability to withstand the region’s demanding environmental conditions while maintaining a clean, contemporary aesthetic. Referencing WELL Building principles, the design prioritizes occupant wellness and connection to nature. The home’s orientation is carefully tuned to maximize daylight, reduce energy demand, and frame long-range mountain and forest views while maintaining defensible space around the perimeter. Strategic placement of end-wall openings fosters natural ventilation and passive cooling, reducing reliance on mechanical systems and improving indoor air quality. Non-toxic, low-emitting materials, filtered air systems, and water-efficient fixtures further support a healthy, sustainable living environment. This fire-resilient Quonset home stands as a model of environmental harmony and human-centered design—balancing protection, comfort, and beauty within the local rugged landscape.
