FLOWER MEMORIAL LIBRARY RENOVATIONS

The Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library restoration and renovation project revitalized one of Watertown’s most cherished historic landmarks. Originally constructed in 1904 by Emma Flower Taylor as a memorial to her father, former New York State Governor Roswell P. Flower, the library has long served as a cultural and civic centerpiece for the community. The project began with the renovation of the 1975 addition, which houses the children’s section, charge desk, reference area, offices, and public restrooms. These updates improved accessibility, functionality, and comfort while preserving the building’s architectural integrity and community-focused mission.

The second phase of the project focused on the restoration of the original 1904 structure, carefully preserving its intricate historic details and craftsmanship. Work included the conservation of murals, paintings, marble finishes, stained glass, decorative flooring, and woodwork, ensuring that the artistry and elegance of the original design were brought back to life. The restoration honors the building’s legacy while preparing it for continued use as a vibrant public resource. The renewed Roswell P. Flower Library now blends history and modern function—preserving its grandeur as a historic landmark while supporting the educational and cultural needs of Watertown’s future generations.
