NORTHERN NEW YORK COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
The Northern New York Community Foundation project celebrated the preservation and revitalization of one of Watertown’s most beloved historic landmarks—the former Black River Valley Club originally built in 1906. This renovation carefully transformed the early 20th-century structure into a modern foundation headquarters while honoring its architectural legacy and civic importance. The project restored many of the building’s defining historic features, including detailed woodwork, the grand staircase, original decorative skylight and period masonry, ensuring that the character and craftsmanship of the original design were preserved. At the same time, new mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems were integrated to bring the facility up to modern performance standards, allowing the building to continue serving the community for generations.
Beyond preservation, the renovation was designed to embody the mission of the Northern New York Community Foundation—strengthening community connections and supporting regional philanthropy. The historic rooms were repurposed into flexible offices, meeting spaces, and event areas that welcome collaboration and engagement. Careful attention to natural light, accessibility, and energy efficiency brings renewed vibrancy to the structure while maintaining its timeless charm. The result is a thoughtful blend of old and new—where historic preservation and contemporary function unite to create a lasting home for a cornerstone organization in Northern New York.
